Abstract: The previous genre-based studies have emphasized the rhetorical organization of the discussion section in research articles or thesis writing. The present study extends this trend by exploring the argumentative structure and its link to stance-taking features in the discussion part-genre written by both expert and student writers. Two corpora were compiled, including discussion samples taken from published research articles and those chosen from Master’s theses in applied linguistics. Both quantitative and qualitative analyses were conducted to identify any differences and similarities between the two groups of writers in terms of their organization of argumentative structure and the stance-taking manner. The results demonstrated that expert and student writers significantly differ in the manipulation of supporting evidence albeit their similar tendency to craft claim-evidence link. The significant differences were particularly found in the realization of interpretive arguments, with student writers employing more use of reason-result pattern whereas established writers presenting the higher occurrence of concessive clauses to reinforce the strength of arguments. Besides, the study also revealed that student writers tend to favor more numerical data while expert writers show greater preferences for generalized evidential and research evaluation to seek support for knowledge claims. Furthermore, the analysis of stance markers highlighted that stance-taking devices are inextricably interwoven with the claim-evidence link, with hedges and self-mentions predominantly serving for the interpretive evidence, attitude markers for both evidential and evaluative labels, and boosters for claim sets and factual evidence. Statistically significant differences between two corpora were also observed across the allocation of stance markers in relation to argumentative structures. The findings of the study have both theoretical and pedagogical implications for EAP writing instruction and learning needs.

The Narrative Significance of Poems in Er Pai and Their Translations

Abstract: The incorporation of verse in prose narrative is a distinctive generic feature of Chinese classical vernacular fictions. Many scholars have regarded poems in fictions as a type of narrative redundancy or a sign of orality and little attention has been paid to the narrative significance of them. The poems remain insignificant because of the potential inconsistency they bring to the narration, but in fact, they perform import narrative functions in the text. This article examines the narrative functions of the poems in Er Pai, and explores the translations of them from a narratological perspective. After an examination of the narrative significance of the poems in Er Pai, we have observed that under the influence of historiography narration, the poems in Er Pai perform structuring function, commenting function and edifying function. Through a detailed analysis of the translations of the poems in Er Pai from a narratological perspective, it reveals that the omission of the poems in translation will lead to the disruption of the narrative structure, weakening of the narrative power and the alteration of the narrator’s image. Since the poems in Er Pai assume important narrative functions, the omission of them in translation is not suggested for the sake of narrative coherence and narrative strength in the target text.

Abstract: Image metaphor comprehends and expresses the known or unknown world in a holistic, comprehensive and emotional way, and has multiple connotations such as the original concrete image, cognitive intermediary and ontological meaning. The subjective metaphor of poetry is expressed by poetic feelings and views with typical intentions. The subjective metaphor of the subjective image can be used as the guiding ideology of the poet's own creation. It often "uses an image to express feelings and ideas." Ideas are nurtured in the heart and become pearls. Imagery is just like these pearls, which are transformed from the ideas in the poet's heart. Li Bai, a poet of the prosperous Tang Dynasty, his poems are separated by more than a century, and he wrote the famous poem "On the Flowery Tower in the Town of Silk" from the inspiration of poetry creation and with emotion in the scenery. This paper takes Li Bai's poem "On the Flowery Tower in the Town of Silk" as an example to analyze the subjective metaphor of its typical images. Through case analysis and comparative analysis, this paper analyzes the versions of Xu Yuanchong and Alley, trying to explain the rationality of the typical images in the two versions.

A Corpus-Based Study of the Chinese Translation of Color Metaphors in Shakespeare’s Plays

Abstract: Metaphor is a fundamental cognitive concept and this study utilizes a corpus-based approach to explore the vibrant color metaphors used in Shakespeare’s plays, as well as the Chinese translations of these metaphors by Liang Shiqiu, Zhu Shenghao, and Fang Ping. The primary focus of this analysis is on the translation methods and strategies employed by these three translators, with an emphasis on how they transfer the form, content (i.e., function), and meaning of the color metaphors into Chinese. Both rhetoric and conceptual metaphors are examined to provide insight into the translation practice of these three individuals. It found that there exists a significant similarity among the three translators in literally translating a majority of the color metaphors in Shakespeare’s plays; however, distinct differences emerge in their adoption of de-metaphorization while translating nonconforming color metaphors. Three major factors are discussed to account for the similarities and differences in translating color metaphors: (1) the shared cultural experiential sources for the color metaphors in English and Chinese cultures; (2) the universality of metaphorical thinking among people from different cultural backgrounds; (3) the skopos (purpose) of the three translators in translating Shakespeare’s plays during various historical periods. This study has significant implications for global corpus-based drama studies and metaphor studies, as well as corpus translation studies.
